Vera Belitsky

I will be conducting my Fulbright research having graduated from Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts, with a B.A. in Anthropology and Community Health. My research in Russia will combine these two disciplines, focusing on the impact of tuberculosis (TB) and the TB control system on individual lives. I will be collecting oral histories from former TB patients, documenting their experiences, with a particular focus on compliance to treatment. TB rates in Russia are some of the highest in the world, especially for drug-resistant TB, and patient compliance is essential to successful TB control. The former patients’ own perspectives will shed new light on understanding how to ensure compliance. Working in Tomsk and Moscow under the supervision of the Boston-based public health organization Partners In Health, I will also extend my research to working with their program to help the most difficult TB cases adhere to treatment. Through this project, I hope to begin to understand the on-the-ground reality of TB control, grounded in a social perspective and the individual experiences of TB patients. I also look forward to enjoying the richness of Moscow’s culture, experiencing rural communities, picking mushrooms in the woods, and, especially, meeting and developing relationships with new people.
