John Cleary

As a lawyer for 44 years and a teacher at San Diego State University (SDSU) for 15 years, I have had an interest in criminal law and Russia. About 15 years ago I started participating in program for exchange of lawyers. In 1996-1998 I studied at Moscow State University (MGU) and received a doctorate in modern languages (Russian) from Middlebury College after writing a dissertation on the Russian jury trial. For the last four years I have taught a SDSU summer course on Russian Criminal Justice at MGU. During the last academic year (2003-2004) I sponsored a young Russian lawyer and MGU graduate law student, Vladimir Stepanov-Eguiants (in picture), who received a Masters in International Law from a local law school. To complement the program of SDSU students in Moscow, in July 2004 12 Russian law students from Moscow participated in a one-month SDSU course on American Criminal Justice that I taught. During my stay in Moscow, I will teach at least one course on criminal law at MGU and do research and preparation for a textbook on Russian Criminal Justice for the course I teach.
