In 2005 and 2006, I will be conducting dissertation research in St. Petersburg, Moscow, and Irkutsk. Since 2002, I have been working on my PhD in history at Columbia University in the city of New York, studying the environmental history of Russia's 18th century North Pacific Empire.
Whenever possible, I go home to the Pacific Northwest to hike the coast and mountains.
Since glimpsing Siberia across the Bering Sea from St. Lawrence Island in 1994, I have been trying to reach the Russian Far East. While my research won't quite take me there, I'll be searching the archives for North Pacific sea otters and any traces of the 18th century German natural historian Georg Wilhelm Steller.
