John A. Taylor

John A. Taylor is Professor of History at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. He will spend the 2004-2005 academic year attached to Smolny College of Saint Petersburg State University where he will teach American colonial history, the history of the American Revolution, and the history of the formation of the U.S. Constitution.

Taylor will also do research as part of his Fulbright year in Russia. He is very interested in the connection between shifts in social values and shifts in household structure, especially shifts in the structure of the family, and his present research project concerns present tensions in the Episcopal Church, USA. In Russia, he will seek advice and opinions from members of the Russian Orthodox Church. Many American Episcopalians claim sympathy with the Orthodox Church, and it will be interesting to learn how members of the Russian Orthodox Church view these claims.

Taylor has written a number of books, and one is in the press right now. It is on the seventeenth-century English herald and statistician Gregory King, a practitioner of political arithmetic. Greenwood Press is publishing this book, and they will bring it out in late 2004.
