Lisa Ryoko Wakamiya

Lisa Ryoko Wakamiya (Ph.D, University of California, Los Angeles) is Assistant Professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures in the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics at Florida State University. Dr. Wakamiya’s research interests include the literature of exile, twentieth-century Russian literature, critical theory, translation, and globalization studies.

Representative recent publications include "Eduard Limonov and the Life and Death of Exilic Identity" (Canadian-American Slavic Studies), "Overcoming Death and Denotation in Sasha Sokolov's A School for Fools" (Die Welt der Slaven), "Zinovy Zinik's Narratives of Cultural Dislocation" (Slavonica), and "Humbert's Appeals to the Jury Not of his Peers" (Approaches to Teaching Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita, forthcoming).

Dr. Wakamiya has taught seminars on Vladimir Nabokov, the literature of exile, and Russian science fiction and maintains an active interest in language teaching methodology. A presenter and invited speaker at numerous national and international conferences, she was co-organizer of the 2005 conference "Trans/National Film and Literature: Cultural Production and the Claims of History" at Florida State University. She received the First-Year Assistant Professor Award in 2004.

The Fulbright award will support research toward her current book project, The Rhetoric of Exile and Return: Locating Contemporary Russian Writing, a study of literature by writers exiled in the last decades of the Soviet period (1970s-1980s) who have since returned to Russia. While in Moscow, she will conduct research in the archives and collections of the Russian State Library, State Public Historical Library, Russian State Archive of Literature and Art, and the Institute of Foreign Literatures at the Russian Academy of Sciences, among other holdings, and consult with scholars of contemporary Russian literature and several of the repatriated writers treated in her study.
