Fulbright Research Project: Models of Electronic Reserves in the U.S. Academic Libraries

Since the mid-1990s, many academic libraries in the U.S. have started projects called Electronic Reserves. The projects are based on digitization, that is the process of converting any documents to machine-readable digital format. Electronic reserve as a new quality information service exemplifies a concept of instant access to all necessary information "from any place at any time".

On the other hand, E-reserves have initiated discussions of an array of issues. Key issues related to copyright and intellectual property in digital environment, information security of electronic resources, models of metadata, quality of selecting materials to be digitized, new demands for users’ information literacy, a higher level of academic library and faculty relationship, and selection of special software have been analyzed profoundly by American scholars and practicing librarians.

The main goal of my research project is to describe models of E-reserves produced by academic librarianship in the U.S. in order to study their use in Russian librarianship and put them into practice of information services in Russian higher school libraries.
