Ethan Bien is an aspiring filmmaker who is coming to Russia on a Fulbright grant to tour the animation studios of the former Soviet Union and conduct interviews with the people who worked in animation in the 1980s. He was born in Jay, Maine, received his BA cum laude in Russian Studies from Vassar College in 2004, writing his thesis on necrorealism. In 2006, he studied filmmaking at Maine Media Workshops in Rockport, ME. From 2007 to 2008 he lived in St. Petersburg and in June of 2008 passed 3rd Certification Russian exams at SPbGU. This will be his third trip to Russia. He is currently living in Baltimore, Maryland, where he works as a translator.
