Alexey Zverev International biennial conference on American Studies

Urban Dimensions of American Civilization
Organized by: Russian State University for the Humanities (Institute for History and Philology, American Studies Program at RSUH, Department for International Relations and Regional Studies of the School of History and Archives), University of Central Florida (College of Arts and Humanities)

Date and venue: May 14-15, 2013. Russian State University for the Humanities, Moscow

The conference aims at broadening the interdisciplinary scope of American Studies through the discussion of issues leading to the formulation of dominant philosophical, anthropological, artistic, social and cultural strategies for understanding and interpreting US urban space; the study of the American city as a historical and cultural phenomenon; the correlation of national approaches to the study of urban America and transnational views of American urban civilization.

Suggested topics for discussion:
- city in American identity discourse;
- semiotics of city and urban culture;
- ethical and aesthetic understanding of urban civilization and topos of a city in literature and arts;
- urban architecture: sacral, symbolic, cultural and social meanings;
- challenges and risks to the urban environment at different stages of US history;
- city as a “melting pot” of the American nation: immigrants in urban space;
- dialogue between American and European cultures concerning American urban space;
- problems of big cities and small towns in Russia and USA: comparative analysis.

Discussions will take the form of plenary and topic panels, a round-table “A Small Town in the USA and Russia: Paradoxes of Development” and a section “Language as a Vehicle for Culture” .
The conference will feature a presentation of the collection of works by Prof. A.M. Zverev Alexey Zverev. Teacher. Scholar. Writer, presentation of the work by Blair A. Ruble Washington’s U-street. A Biography, a meeting with Prof. Werner Sollors (Harvard University) and a discussion on new views of the history of American literature.

Working languages: Russian, English.

Deadline for paper submissions: March 10, 2013. Please send the filled-in submission form (see attachment) by email. Participation confirmations and official invitations will be sent by April, 10, 2013 after the selection procedure. The proceedings of the conference will be published.

Participation fee – 400 rubles. Fee waiver applies to students.

Unfortunately we cannot provide travel or accommodation grants.
