Fulbright American Film Club

In the academic year 2015-2016 «Fulbright American Film Club» was held at Pyatigorsk State Linguistic University. It is one of the winners of 2015 Small Grants for Russian Fulbright Alumni. The organizer of the club is Anna Ovsepian, - Fulbright FLTA 2014-2015 grantee at St. Olaf College, Minnesota, USA. While being an FLTA, Anna took two classes connected to Film Studies (Introduction to Film Studies and Hard-boiled Fiction and Film Noir), which inspired her to open this club. Valentina Briginevich, who is an alumna of FLTA 2011-2012 program, also actively participated in the work of the club. During the year the participants of the club did a lot of activities together: from watching and discussing films to learning Film Studies terminology.

During the year different film episodes and films from American classics like “Citizen Kane”, “Casablanca”, “All The President’s Men”. “Goodfellas” to contemporary Hollywood masterpieces like “Titanic”, “Babel”, “21 Grams”, “Maps to Stars”, “Argo” etc. were watched. Besides watching them, the club participants were using the terminology that they learnt to analyze the scenes and entire films.

The participants of the club also followed the Award season and made their predictions about the winners of the biggest American film awards like “Golden Globes” and “The Oscars”. They were also able to make some personal favorites among the films that were produced and later nominated that year.
One of the highlight events of the year was the meeting with four American students from St. Olaf College, where Anna used to teach while being a Fulbright scholar. They came to see the beauty of North Caucasus and the club participants were happy to show them around and tell them about cinematic and literary history of Pyatigorsk. The Americans were also happy to share the information about the movies filmed in Minnesota.

A lot of students who participated in the work of the club are now planning to apply to different Fulbright programs, so just like their instructor Anna who found her passion in cinema after studying it in the USA; they can also find something that they are passionate about.
