Exhibition “From New York to Solovki”

The exhibition opened on March 28, 2014. Held in Central city library of Saint-Petersburg named after Vladimir Mayakovsky the exhibition became a cultural event, contributing to the non-political dimension of American-Russian relations – dialogue through art, cultural tourism and faith between the two countries. It showed the architectural treasures of the two countries – Manhattan skyscrapers, orthodox churches of New York and of Solovetsky islands. At the launch party the author spoke about his creative experience as a Fulbright alumnus, presented the exhibition, invited guests to thematic stand-up buffet (chips and Coca-cola as an American snack and dried fish with cranberry juice as a Russian treat) and offered author's souvenirs (bookmarks with reproductions of works from the exhibition), which made sense for the exhibition held in a library. Public mostly consisted of students. Few other Fulbrighters also came and invited their colleagues. The exposition contained over 30 paintings and was open for free till April 26. Closing of the exhibition was timed to the “Night in the library” – an all-Russian event when public libraries are open all the night and offer various types of cultural entertainment to visitors.

The exhibition didn’t receive media coverage in local printed press because of little scope of the event. It was announced on social networks and the web site of the library. Records in the guestbook show positive feedback from visitors, invitation for further collaboration from the direction of the library also speaks for the success of the event.

After Saint-Petersburg the paintings were exhibited for one day at Saint-Alexis boarding school in the Yaroslavl oblast during the all-Russian educational conference.
