Irina Golovacheva

Irina Golovacheva, born in 1958 in St.Petersburg (Russia). B.A. and Ph.D. from St.Petersburg State University (English Language and Literature). The Ph.D. (candidate) dissertation was devoted to Henry James's middle phase with an emphasis on 'The Turn of the Screw', the American romantic tradition and the philosophy of pragmatism. The scholar is an Associate Professor at the School of Philology (St.Petersburg State University). Special fields of interest: ghothicism in world literature, science fiction, utopias, mass literature and detective prose. The publications include prefaces to the works of Aldous Huxley, Ray Bradbury and Isaak Asimov. Dr. Golovacheva also wrote about William Shakespeare, Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Bram Stoker, Ernest Hemingway, Iris Murdoch, J.P.Donleavy, Tom Wolfe, etc. The Fulbright research project (at the University of Nebraska (Lincoln) will analyse Aldous Huxley's ideology and art within "Transatlantic frame" which allows to see him not only as a European man of letters but also as an American author. It is a rediscovery of his role in American intellectual history, his involvement in the life of the scientific community as well as of his assessment of Western psychology and Eastern mystical theories and practice.
