Mary Felicity Barratt

I teach English as a second language to international students at Iowa State University (Intensive English and Orientation Program). My Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree are both in Linguistics, from UC Berkeley and Ohio University, respectively. I received my PhD in Higher Education/International Education at Iowa State University.

I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Ghana (Ghana Institute of Journalism), an English teacher in Rennes, France (Institut Franco-Americain), and a Fulbright lecturer in TESL/Teacher Training in Bari, Italy. I have also taught ESL at the Harvard University summer school.

Last year I had a wonderful experience as the advisor for a Russian scholar who was at Iowa State University through the Junior Professional Development Program, Dr. Alexey Konobeev. Dr. Konobeev is the Deputy Director of the Institute of Sustainable Education of Tambov State University named after G.R. Derzhavin.

I will spend the fall semester of 2006 working with Dr. Konobeev and his colleagues at TSU, developing a collaborative distance-learning course in English as a foreign language. I will participate in teaching an American language and culture course and a writing for mass media course, and do collaborative research with Russian colleagues in TESL and Linguistics. I also look forward to working with English as a foreign language teachers in the schools in the region.

I developed an interest in Russia when I met my husband, a Russian, in 2000. So much of my life in the last six years has focused on Russia and Russian culture that I feel that I have a reasonably good grasp of the culture for one who has never been to Russia! However, the truth of that statement remains to be seen, and I look forward to spending a semester in Russia. I know this will enhance my understanding and appreciation of the language and culture, my language proficiency, and my professional development and contributions.
