Virginia H. Bennett

Virginia H. Bennett was born in New Jersey, and attended schools there. She is a graduate of Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart. She then went on to obtain a diplôme breveté from L'Ecole Nationale des Langues Orientales Vivantes in Paris, now subsumed into the Sorbonne. Her final advanced degree is a Ph.D. from Princeton University in Slavic Languages and Literatures. She has traveled to Russia numerous times, spent a year there on an IREX grant, and another time was Resident Director for a year for ACTR. She has taught Russian, Russian literature and culture. In Russia on a previous Fulbright there, she taught upper level English conversation, translation from Russian into English. Russian culture, and French literature in French. Her major interest is the history of Russian literature, with a special focus on Russian Symbolism. Secondary areas in which she has also published her research are Russian folklore and Ukrainian literature of the early 20th century. She is currently an Associate Professor of Russian Literature and Language at the University of Hawaii / Manoa.
