Stuart Goldberg

Stuart Goldberg is Assistant Professor of Russian at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, where he teaches Russian language, literature and film. He taught previously at Davidson College in North Carolina.

He received his bachelors degree with highest honors from Williams College in Russian, Soviet Studies and his Ph.D. in Slavic Languages and Literatures from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. His articles include "The Poetics of Return in Osip Mandel’štam’s ‘Solominka’" (Russian Literature), "Bedside with the Symbolist Hero: Blok in Mandelstam’s ‘Pust’ v dushnoi komnate’" (Slavic Review) and "Blok’s Living Rampa: On the Spatial and Conceptual Structuring of the Theater Poems" (forthcoming, Slavic and East European Journal). An article published in SEEJ on Adam Mickiewicz’s theatrical masterpiece Dziady has recently been translated for inclusion in an anthology of Western scholarship on Polish literature to be published by the Polish Academy of Sciences. His primary expertise is in Russian literary Modernism and poetry and poetics.

Stuart first came to the former Soviet Union in August, 1991. That year, he studied history at Kazakh State University (Almaty), worked in the Kazakhstan Institute of Management and Economics, and met his wife, Madina. In 1993-1994, he lived in Moscow and worked at the International Press Center. In 2002-2003, he lived in Kazan, where he pursued his scholarly interests, wrote poetry and attended various litob’’edineniia. He is an avid hiker, canoeist and sometime rock-climber.

Based at the Russian State University for the Humanities during his Fulbright grant, Stuart will be conducting archival research and consulting with scholars in Moscow and St. Petersburg. His current project, a book tentatively entitled Mandelstam, Blok and the Boundaries of Mythopoetic Symbolism, explores the influence of the younger generation of Russian Symbolists on Osip Mandelstam and Mandelstam's play with distance and immediacy in his assimilation of the Symbolist heritage.
