William Beckon

I am very much looking forward to spending a year learning about Russia and teaching biology at St. Petersburg State University in the homeland of my wife, Anna (pictured). Until she came to the U.S. after marrying me, Anna was a professor of linguistics at PyatigorskStateLinguisticUniversity in southern Russia.

From my varied background in physics, biology, and computer programming, I hope I will be able to contribute something useful to the faculty and students of St. Petersburg. Most recently I have been working for the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, monitoring the toxic effects of agricultural drain water on wildlife. I started out with a bachelor's degree in physics from PomonaCollege.

I served for five years as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Fiji, teaching junior high school and writing a book on the wildlife of Fiji. I earned a Ph.D. in ecology and island biogeography from the University of California at Davis, where I later taught anatomy. As a National Science Foundation Fellow, I studied the distribution of birds on the Ryukyu Islands.

As time permits, I work on developing new solar cooker designs. Frigid St.Petersburg should put these designs to the test!
