Vera Volchansky

Vera Volchansky serves as music director of the KU Camerata Chamber Orchestra and assistant conductor with the KU Symphony Orchestra. A winner of the Fulbright Award to study in St. Petersburg, she has also been chosen a conducting fellow with the American Academy of Conducting at Aspen to work with David Zinman in 2007.

During her Fulbright, she will concentrate her studies on the twentieth-century Russian orchestral music and also on the Russian style of orchestral performance. She will study the history of Russian music at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, and also work closely with maestro Peter Gribanov, music director of the Rostov Philharmonic and Congress Orchestra of the Philharmonic Society of St. Petersburg. This study will further her goal of becoming a specialist in the twentieth-century Russian orchestral music.

In 2007 she was featured at the Vespers Concert at the Lied Center of Kansas, and has directed six performances of Guys and Dolls at the University of Kansas. She was born in Volgograd, Russia, and began studying violin with her father at the age of six. Ms. Volchansky holds a master’s degree in conducting from the Eastman School and a doctorate from the University of Kansas.
