Anna Berman

I graduated from Brown University in 2005 with a degree in Slavic Studies and Comparative Literature.

I began studying Russian in high school and since that time I have completely fallen in love with Russian culture. While my coursework has focused on high culture—literature, theater, and fine art—I have also had the opportunity to spend time in rural villages and have become fascinated by folk culture. When I was sixteen I participated in my first folklore collecting expedition in rural Russia and since then I have returned for two more expeditions. While I plan to go on and do graduate work in Russian literature, my goal for my Fulbright year is to explore aspects of Russian culture that are difficult to study outside of Russia. To that end, I will be devoting the upcoming year to studying Russian art history at European University in St. Petersburg and traveling to villages to explore their unusual visual culture. I am specifically interested in the use of patterns in Russian fine art and in village house interiors and textiles.

In my spare time, I enjoy drawing, calligraphy, knitting, playing the harp, singing, and drinking tea.
