Yana Pleshivoy

I am a recent gradate of Miami University, where I received a Bachelor of Arts/Sciences in Speech Pathology and Audiology and Russian studies.

My interest in both speech pathology and the Russian language emerged when I volunteered as an English as a Second Language tutor to newly immigrated Russian children. As a junior in college, I received a research fellowship to travel to St. Petersburg and Moscow as a participant in the Havighurst Center

for Russian and Post Soviet Affairs summer workshop. This opportunity allowed me to combine my passion for helping the disabled population and Russian culture into an empirical comparative case study. During my time abroad, I conducted an analysis of the services, disorders, and success rates of treatment within the speech pathology (Logopedia) field in Russia as compared to those within the U.S. Further, I investigated the influence of preponderant social attitudes toward the mentally challenged and explored whether disabled

individuals are given any opportunity to contribute to their respective communities. During my senior year I received the Deans scholar research award, which allowed me to present my findings at the Miami University undergraduate research forum.

For the next ten months, the Fulbright Grant will allow me to expand upon my previous research by exploring the basis for classification of communicative disorders treated by Russian speech pathology professionals, the potential biological, environmental, and social causes of such disorders, and existing

treatment alternatives available to patients. Moreover, I am interested in discovering the social, political, and economic environment in which speech pathology operates and how it directly reflects the treatment of disabled individuals. In addition to my primary field work, I will take graduate speech pathology courses at The Herzen State Pedagogical University to enhance my existing language proficiency and attain fluency in the technical terminology utilized throughout the profession.

In my spare time I enjoy Latin dancing, playing tennis, reading, and traveling.
