FLTA Program: Eligibility

    - Applicants must be teachers of English or in training to become teachers of English, and at minimum must possess the equivalent of a U.S. Bachelor’s degree by June 2020 to allow time to submit an official transcript prior to the start of the Fulbright FLTA Program.
    - Fluency in English is mandatory, demonstrated by a score of no less than 550 (paper based TOEFL); 213 (computer based TOEFL – CBT); 79-80 (internet based TOEFL – IBT) or 6.0 (overall score International English Language Testing System – IELTS).
    - Applicants must demonstrate maturity, dependability, integrity, and professionalism. Material misrepresentation (e.g., plagiarism) at any time during the application or grant period is grounds for selection withdrawal or grant termination, as well as ineligibility for future participation.
    - Applicants must be residing in their home country throughout the nomination and selection process. - Due to the structure of the Fulbright FLTA Program, FLTA applicants are young, early career educators capable of succeeding in the dual role of teaching assistant and student. They must be open to living with their U.S. student peers in undergraduate or graduate level campus housing and also engaging with faculty and staff with maturity and professionalism.

    Specifics of the Program

    Fulbright FLTA participants are required to return to their home countries upon completion of the nine-month program. ECA will not support any extension requests for participants. The Fulbright FLTA program does not support dependents or family members. Candidates may not have any dependents accompany them for any time during the program. Family and friends may visit program participants during holiday periods. By extension of this policy, pregnant candidates may not participate in the program if the birth is due during the program period.

Participants of the FLTA program should approach teaching with enthusiasm. They should be sincerely interested in teaching Russian and Russian culture to American students. In their application form, they should show knowledge of the culture of their country and awareness of current events in the country. They should possess leadership qualities, the ability to guide their students and interact well with students. Participants of the program should be full of desire to communicate with people and to become a part of the community, participating in various presentations and events on campus. They should be able to work creatively, to be independent, but, at the same time, to be able to work well with colleagues, i.e. to develop good relations with teachers, students and the personnel of your educational institution in the USA.

Many institutions in the USA, wish to receive FLTA participants who demonstrate an interest in adapting to and residing in small cities or in the countryside. Candidates should also have excellent organizational skills and the ability to use a computer. Interests in playing sports, working outside, music, dance, theatre, literature, poetry, and culinary skills are also encouraged and welcomed. The greatest character traits the candidate should demonstrate are flexibility and readiness to gain new knowledge and share it.
