Melissa Frazier

I am a specialist in Russian and comparative literature and author most recently of Romantic Encounters: Writers, Readers and the “Library for Reading” (Stanford UP, 2007; winner, 2007 Jean-Pierre Barricelli prize for “best work in Romanticism studies”). At Sarah Lawrence College, I am also the Russian Department in its entirety: I teach all levels of the language that we offer at SLC, and I advise all study-abroad students. While my own experience in Russia has pertained almost entirely to Moscow and St. Petersburg, my language students choose increasingly to study in a range of smaller cities, including Vladimir, Yaroslavl and (on two different programs) Irkutsk. My hope is that my affiliation with the Urals State University in Ekaterinburg next spring will help me better prepare my students for study abroad in Russia today. I am also very excited at the prospect of gaining a new perspective on the comparative approach which has marked my work at Sarah Lawrence, both in my study of Russian Romanticism in Romantic Encounters and also in my teaching of Russian literature courses with a distinctly Americanist slant.

My husband Joe Hatem and daughters Lucy (15) and Rose (11) will join me in Ekaterinburg.
