James Meador

I graduated from Reed College in 2009 with an interdisciplinary BA in Russian and Religious Studies. These two interests were born out of a trip to Solovki in 1998, and were greatly enriched by a year of study at the Saint Petersburg School of Religion and Philosophy with the support of a Boren Scholarship in 2006-7.

My senior thesis examined the life and work of the Buddhist scholar Bidiya Dandaron. Dandaron spent twenty years in labor camps, and in freedom become a distinguished philologist of the Tibetan language and mentor to the first known group of Soviet converts to Buddhism.

My Fulbright addresses the roots of the 1990s' religious revivals alongside the emergence of the academic study of religion in post-Soviet Russia. I will be studying at Saint Petersburg State University.
