Barbara H. Partee

Barbara H. Partee is Distinguished University Professor of Linguistics and Philosophy Emerita at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, specializing in formal semantics and related topics in syntax, philosophy of language, logic, and cognitive science. Since 1996 she has been dividing her time between Moscow and Amherst, and has taught at RGGU in Moscow almost every spring semester while carrying on collaborative research with her husband Vladimir Borschev and other Russian colleagues with NSF grant support. Her Fulbright project in Moscow January-June 2005 will be to teach an introduction to formal semantics at RGGU, hosted by Vera Podlesskaya, and an advanced seminar on research topics in the semantics of Russian at Moscow State University, hosted by Aleksandr Kibrik. Formal semantics, which uses linguistic and logical tools to investigate how meanings of sentences are built up from meanings of words and of syntactic constructions, has become part of mainstream linguistic theory in the West, but is still barely known in Russia, which has rich traditions in lexical and functional semantics and in typology. Linguistics students in Moscow are strong in logic and have shown great interest in learning about formal semantics. Both Partee’s Fulbright project and her collaborative NSF research project are aimed at integrating Russian semantics and Western formal semantics.

Partee had an earlier Fulbright grant to RGGU in 2000 and received an honorary doctorate from RGGU in 2001. Partee also received honorary doctorates from her alma mater Swarthmore College (1989) and from Charles University in Prague (1992). She is a fellow of the National Academy of Science, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a Foreign Fellow of the Royal Dutch Academy of Arts and Sciences. She was President of the Linguistic Society of America in 1986.
